The Bit Everyone Misses
"Detective" isn't a higher rank — it's a specialism. A DC is the same rank as a PC. A DS is the same rank as a Sergeant. It just means plainclothes investigation instead of uniformed patrol.
The Ladder
Lowest to highest, uniformed rank on the left and its investigative counterpart on the right.
Characters almost never get their full title said out loud. You won't hear "Detective Chief Inspector Stanhope" — you'll hear a surname on a case board, then someone shouting "Guv" down a corridor.

Camille Bordey
