Who Outranks Who?
DC, DS, DI, DCI — who actually outranks who? A quick, friendly key to the initials every British mystery assumes you already know.

"Detective" isn't a higher rank — it's a specialism. A DC is the same rank as a PC. A DS is the same rank as a Sergeant. It just means plainclothes investigation instead of uniformed patrol.
