Brenda Blethyn's DCI Vera Stanhope is one of television's great detectives — rumpled, brilliant, and deeply human beneath the battered hat and mac. Set against the wild, beautiful Northumberland coast, each feature-length case is a slow-burn character study as much as a murder mystery. Comfort viewing of the highest order, with a lead performance that never stops surprising. Vera streams on BritBox in the US, alongside plenty more covered in British TV Hub's guide to British TV streaming services.

Ann Cleeves — who also created Shetland and The Long Call — wrote the Vera Stanhope novels that inspired the series, and Brenda Blethyn played the character in every one of its 14 series, from the show's 2011 debut through to two feature-length finale episodes in 2025.
An OBE and two-time Oscar nominee for Secrets & Lies and Little Voice, Blethyn has said she wasn't the obvious choice to play a woman in charge of a team of men, but grew to love the character. Ann Cleeves has since finished the final Vera Stanhope novel and confirmed that, unlike some fictional detectives, Vera survives it.
