Vera's original sergeant, DS Joe Ashworth, for Series 1 to 4. Leon returned as Ashworth, now a detective inspector, for Series 13 and 14, and Blethyn has said she would not have come back for Series 13 without him.

A Detective Who Breaks the Mould
Vera is shabby, blunt and relentlessly persistent, a sharp contrast with the polished detectives of much British crime drama. Her gruff manner hides real care for victims and for her team.

Few crime dramas make such use of their landscape. Newcastle streets, empty beaches and Northumberland moorland give every case a strong sense of place.

Newcastle and the Northumberland Coast
Filmed in and around the North East of England, the series moves between Newcastle and Gateshead and the Northumberland coastline. Whitley Bay, North Shields, Amble, Alnmouth and Bamburgh are among its locations.
A Farmhouse on Holy Island
The farmhouse used for exterior shots of Vera's home stands on the Snook, part of Holy Island (Lindisfarne), which is cut off from the mainland by the tide twice a day.
