David Mitchell is perfectly cast: dry, anxious, and unexpectedly moving. One of the BBC's biggest recent hits, and easy to see why. Season 2 is here
Season two picks up right where the finale left off. John no longer has to pretend to be his brother — Cambridge Police Authority has brought him on properly, as a Crime Scene Consultant working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) on the cases that don't add up. That means he gets to be openly, fully himself: brilliant with puzzles, still hopeless at basically everything else. The catch is that being an official employee comes with rules, and one of them is that he's explicitly barred from using police resources to keep searching for James. Naturally, that doesn't stop him — and it definitely doesn't stop Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), who takes matters into her own hands this season by working the search from a different angle entirely.

Six episodes make up this season, arriving weekly on BritBox in North America starting October 13, with the finale landing November 17. New to the cast this time: Mark Bonnar as a newspaper editor named Gareth Fisher, Sian Clifford (Fleabag) as local MP Joanne Kemper, Ben Ashenden as DC Ethan Cole, and Rumi Sutton as DC Caitlin Sullivan. Stephen Merchant also turns up partway through the season for a guest turn as a rather full-of-himself snooker champion who crosses paths with John. Dylan Hughes, Dorothy Atkinson, Ralph Ineson, and Karl Pilkington are all back too, rounding out the Cambridge cast that made season one work so well.

The show's central trick hasn't changed — John still treats every crime scene like a logic puzzle to be solved, which is exactly the charm that made season one such a hit. What's shifting is the bigger mystery underneath it: James is still missing, the search is picking up new momentum, and the season looks set to dig further into who actually knew what and when.

Mark Brotherhood — who also wrote for Death in Paradise and Mount Pleasant — created and wrote Ludwig, casting David Mitchell in the dual role of reclusive puzzle-setter John Taylor and his missing detective twin, James. The show went on to win Best Comedy at the 2025 International Emmy Awards.
