Set in the Cheshire village of Great Paxford, Home Fires follows the members of the local Women's Institute as they hold their community together on the home front during the Second World War. Fans of Call the Midwife will recognise the ensemble of strong, very different women and the way small acts of kindness carry each episode.
Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton and Eileen Atkins lead this adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's stories about the women of a small Cheshire town in the early 1840s. It was adapted by Heidi Thomas, the creator of Call the Midwife, and shares the same gentle humour and affection for a community facing change.
Based on Flora Thompson's semi-autobiographical novels, this drama follows young Laura Timmins as she leaves her rural hamlet to work at the post office in the neighbouring market town. Its warm, episodic stories about working-class families and their neighbours make it a comforting companion to life at Nonnatus House.
Four young women from very different walks of life join the Women's Land Army and are sent to work on a country estate during the Second World War. Like Call the Midwife, it looks at class, friendship and the working lives of women, in short and easy-to-watch series.
Peter Bowker's drama follows ordinary civilians caught up in the Second World War, moving between a working-class family in Manchester and lives in Warsaw, Paris and Berlin. It is heavier in tone than Call the Midwife, but shares its focus on everyday people and its willingness to tackle hard subjects with compassion.
A young vet joins a country practice in the Yorkshire Dales, where the job brings him into the homes and lives of every farming family in the area. Like the midwives of Poplar, he learns as much about people as he does about his work, and the show has the same reassuring warmth.
A village vicar teams up with a local detective to solve crimes in postwar Cambridgeshire, in the same era Call the Midwife covers. The mysteries are gentle, and the show spends just as much time on its characters' faith, friendships and personal struggles.
Martin Clunes plays a gifted but tactless surgeon who becomes the GP of a Cornish seaside village after developing a fear of blood. It's modern and much more comic than Call the Midwife, but it offers the same mix of medical cases and a close-knit community.
