About the show
James Runcie's Grantchester Mysteries novels inspired the show, and Runcie — son of Robert Runcie, the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1980 to 1991 — has said only one character is based on a real person: housekeeper Mrs. Maguire, named after his own family's real-life secretary. Robson Green has played DI Geordie Keating across the show's entire run since 2014, while the vicar role has been recast twice: James Norton originated it for the first four series before leaving for Happy Valley and McMafia, followed by Tom Brittney and then Rishi Nair.
