British Period Drama · ITV / PBS · 2015–2016
On the WWII home front, the women of a rural English village band together through the Women's Institute to keep the nation's fabric intact during its darkest hour — discovering inner resources that change their lives forever. Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis lead as headstrong rivals dishing out orders and quips in equal measure. A heartwarming story of courage, friendship, and quiet resilience with a real can-do spirit. About the show
Home Fires was created by Simon Block, inspired by Julie Summers' non-fiction book Jambusters about the Women's Institute's real wartime work, and set in the fictional Cheshire village of Great Paxford. ITV cancelled the show after just two series despite a devoted following, prompting a fan campaign that failed to save it. Block eventually continued the story in novel form instead, writing two books so fans could find out what happened after the cliffhanger finale.
