The Durrells in Corfu

4 Series Stars Keeley Hawes 1930s Corfu Comedy Drama Feel-good

Widowed Louisa Durrell uproots her four wayward children from dreary 1930s Bournemouth to the sun-soaked Greek island of Corfu, where chaos, romance, and gentle comedy ensue. Based on Gerald Durrell's autobiographical books, it's heartwarming by way of biting wit and gloriously flawed characters who, above all, love one another. Blue skies, azure seas, puppies, and plenty of accordion-mockery — pure escapism with real heart. The Durrells in Corfu airs on PBS; for more, see British TV Hub's guide to where to watch British TV in the US.

About the show

Simon Nye adapted all four series of The Durrells from Gerald Durrell's own trilogy of memoirs about his family's years on Corfu, and wrote every one of its 26 episodes himself. Keeley Hawes starred as widowed mother Louisa Durrell throughout, alongside Josh O'Connor as future novelist Lawrence and Milo Parker as young Gerald, the real-life naturalist who later founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. Durrell's widow, Lee Durrell, served as a consultant on the series, connecting the show back to the family whose real Corfu years inspired it.
