Holy Island / Lindisfarne
Vera Stanhope's cottage is filmed at a real farmhouse on Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island — the tidal island connected to the mainland by a causeway that floods twice a day. Production crews and cast are regularly spotted driving across it, and the island's Snook House location has stood in as Vera's home across the whole run of the show, including a starring role in the 2023 Christmas special.
Newcastle
Vera's fictional Northumberland and City Police force is based out of Newcastle, and the production leans into the city's most recognisable landmarks for exterior shots — the Quayside along the River Tyne, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, and glimpses of the city's famous run of seven bridges.
Alnmouth, Amble, Warkworth & Bamburgh
The coastline does as much storytelling as the cast. Recurring coastal locations include colourful, dune-backed Alnmouth; the harbour town of Amble; the historic village of Warkworth; and Bamburgh, whose sweeping sands sit within sight of both the Farne Islands and Holy Island. St Mary's Lighthouse, on its own tidal islet near Whitley Bay, has also featured as a filming location.
Hexham, Wylam & Corbridge
Away from the coast, Vera has made regular use of Northumberland's inland market towns — Hexham, with its historic abbey, along with Wylam and Corbridge, both known for their well-preserved streets and riverside settings. Filming has also ranged further afield into County Durham and Teesside over the show's 14 series.
Cambois, Glanton & the River Wansbeck
The final series returned to the Southeast Northumberland village of Cambois, with cast spotted filming around the local housing estate. The River Wansbeck and its bridge at Ashington appear throughout the series (sometimes referred to on-screen, inaccurately, as the Tyne), and the small village of Glanton featured in Vera's very last episode.

Northumberland's tourism board and a couple of specialist tour operators run guided day trips through the show's key locations, typically covering Newcastle's Quayside, the coastal villages, and the causeway crossing to Holy Island. If you're planning your own self-guided version, checking Lindisfarne's tide tables before you go is essential — the causeway floods on a schedule, and getting the timing wrong is a genuinely common visitor mistake.
