Years before Vera or Shetland, Cleeves published this birdwatching mystery featuring elderly amateur sleuth George Palmer-Jones. The sense of place that makes her work so beloved today is already on full display. Reissued in the US in 2025, giving American readers a chance to see where her storytelling began.

A full year before Inspector Rebus ever appeared, Rankin published this coming-of-age story set in a small Scottish mining town, written while he was working toward a PhD. Reissued in 2005 for a new generation of readers, the atmosphere and sense of place that would come to define his celebrated Edinburgh crime novels is already unmistakable here.

Thorogood created Death in Paradise for the BBC in 2011, then brought his knack for a great locked-room puzzle to the page four years later, featuring DI Richard Poole on the fictional island of Saint Marie.
